One part conference, one part family cookout (and bomb potato salad) – The Photo Cookout is an annual event that aims to inspire and connect a global community of passionate Black photographers. Created and hosted by Dr. Tomayia Colvin, The Photo Cookout features educational seminars led by pro photographers, guided photo walks and styled shoots to elevate every portfolio, and networking opportunities with other industry professionals.
Sprout Studio is a proud sponsor and supporter of The Photo Cookout; we’re thrilled to introduce you to 3 incredible members of the Sprout Studio fam who will each be speaking on their photography expertise at this year’s event in Chattanooga, TN.

I’m an entire mood, they say. I lead with joy first.I picked up the camera shortly after I became pregnant with my son and grew to love it instantly. I know the magic of what a simple picture can do for you.My mission is to be what I want the world to see. To change the narrative for Black women in business, Black men, families and people of Color through portraiture. I will renew your spirit with every frame that I take. Meet Annette Matthews
Annette is a professional boudoir photographer and creative director. With a portrait photography background and experience in other areas of photography, she captures exceptional creative images which show how differently we express self-love.
In her own words:
I have been photographing professionally since 2017, and my passion for the camera was burning bright long before that. Growing up, I always had a camera with me – seeking to capture that real, authentic, genuine moment. My style of photography is best described as natural and vivid. I capture my clients naturally and encourage them to be their true, authentic selves when shooting. My clients have said I’m great at artistically capturing powerful photos and finding the light in every personality.
Annette’s Photo Cookout Class: Posing Same-Sex Couples with Confidence
Annette’s course will help photographers feel more confident when posing same-sex couples. Photographers may often shy away from opportunities when faced with the comfortability of working with a demographic client whom they have not photographed before. With Annette’s guidance, photographers will learn how to build trust with clients, plus gain the opportunity to photograph couples of the LGBTQ+ community to create a beautifully inclusive portfolio.
