Every year I visit the Dentist.
I am greeted by name by the receptionist, who asks me to sit and wait for the Dental Hygienist. The Hygienist comes out to the waiting room within 5 minutes, and also greets me by name, along with a friendly smile. She brings me back to an exam room for my check-up and cleaning.
Once she’s done, my Dentist comes in to the room. He greets me by name and shakes my hand. As he sits over me and exams my mouth, he asks how my photography business is doing, if I had a busy wedding season, whether my Mom had retired from nursing yet, and if my brother Rob had found a full-time job teaching yet.
He talks to me and treats me as though I am a friend. He engages in conversation with me, and he makes sure I know that he cares about me.
You must be engaging in conversation with your clients in a relevant way.
Now – my Dentist probably sees close to 50 patients a day, 5 days-a-week. Does he actually remember all these details for every single patient? Highly unlikely. Have I been a patient for a while? Yes – my whole life. Are my parents and brother patients of his, too? You betcha!
I suspect they have a system to track details, record notes and connect relationships so that each patient feels as though they are remembered. Before he comes in to the room to see me, he probably reviews it quickly to give him some context and points of conversation.
Sure beats the “how about this weather, eh?” small-talk, or asking “so what do you do for a living, Bryan?” every time.
That’s the kind of system you need as a photographer.
